Frankfurt - Italy has received more Blue Flags for its beaches than last year by the non-profit organisation the Foundation for Environmental Education. A total of 113 locations with 227 beaches were given Blue Flags - nine more than last year, according to Italy's tourist office in Frankfurt.

A Blue Flag is an indication that high water quality and safety standards have been met by a beach's caretakers.

The regions of Toscana and Liguria have the most Blue Flags. A full list of Blue Flag beaches in Italy can be found online at www.feeitalia.org.

The Blue Flag system is in operation in 37 countries. According to the Copenhagen-based Foundation for Environmental Education there are over 3,200 beaches around the world with Blue Flag status.
