Demjanjuk lawyer calls detention of war crimes suspect 'inhumane'

Berlin - A lawyer representing John Demjanjuk, the Ukrainian-born man accused of herding Jews to the gas chambers in a Nazi death camp, said Sunday the pre-trial detention of his client, 89, in Germany was "inhumane."In comments to appear Monday in the newspaper Tagesspiegel, Ulrich Busch said he met with Demjanjuk for five hours on Saturday in Munich's Stadelheim Prison and concluded he was suffering psychologically. "His detention is a breach of our constitution and of human dignity," said Busch. He said Demjanjuk was outwardly robust, but the prosecution was wearing him down psychologically by virtue of having him back in prison after 30 years of resisting charges. Busch and another lawyer have applied for bail for Demjanjuk. Demjanjuk was delivered to Munich from the United States on Tuesday to answer accessory-to-murders charges that he worked at Sobibor death camp in Poland as an auxiliary, or guard employed by the SS, during 1943 in a period where 29,000 Jews were killed. Demjanjuk, who lived in Germany from 1945 to 1952, has not been indicted yet, but prosecutors say a trial may begin within weeks. The Sobibor camp commandant, Franz Stangl, was jailed for life in 1970 in Germany and died in prison. A German court had tried 11 other Sobibor SS guards in 1965-66, imprisoning six, one for life. One committed suicide during his trial.

Mever to old to be prosecuted for a crime? Firstly, what about double jeopardy? After 10 gruelling years in an Israeli prison and a death sentence, it was proven that the accusations were false. With this new twist on the same theme, how much evidence can be gathered, how many witnesses are left? The bottom line is that if Demjanjuk did indeed work as a prison guard somewhere (they can't even get that resolved), he was forced to do so, like countless others, or be killed. Germany is the culprit, now they are trying to be more Catholic than the Pope. As for trying someone for crimes committed over 65 years ago, how about trying the Israeli murderers who slaughtered hundreds of innocent Gazan civilians about 5 months ago, especially the butchers of tiny children?

What a disgusting way of twisting the truth of this story. "accused of herding Jews to the gas chambers" isnt even contended in the charges !! Then "having him back in prison after 30 years of resisting charges" RESISTING CHARGES??? He was found not guilty even by Israel after spending years on death row and doing everything they could to kill him . Now you have the same yelling and crying liars from before still given credibility after all that and articles like this going even further!! It is the false accusers who should be prosecuted for attempted murder and surely not being allowed to continue in it!!

What a shame. The crimes he is accused of were certainly far less humane. I must have missed where it says if you are old you can't be put on trial for crimes.
