London - Middlesbrough's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a blow on Tuesday as Afonso Alves was ruled out of the final two games of the season. The Brazilian striker was stretchered out of Middlesbrough's 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday following a challenge with Nicky Butt.
A scan on Tuesday confirmed he has suffered a fractured metatarsal.
Defender Emmanuel Pogatetz will also miss the rest of the campaign having had knee surgery.
Middlesbrough are three points from safety with two games of the season remaining.
