Ottawa - Canadian parliamentarians want their Olympic team to wear seal skin on their uniforms at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games in protest of a European Union import ban on seal products. Local news reports said on Thursday that an according - non-binding - motion from the Bloc Quebocois was supported by all parteies and that the February 12-28 Games are to promote seal products.

Opposing seal hunting carried out by Canada and ther countries, the EU on Tuesday decided on an import ban for all seal products.

"The government should take advantage of the opportunity provided by the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games to promote seal products, particularly by studying the possibility of using these products in the making of the Canadian Olympic clothing," said the motion.

However, Canadian Olympic Committee president Mike Chambers was quoted as saying that seal products on the uniforms would politicize the Games.

"It's our intent for our athletes to remain free of the politics that arises in and around the Olympic Games. The seal issue, while important, is an issue that has become politicized," he said.

The Vancouver organizing committee did not comment because the nation's Olympic Committee alone is responsible for the uniforms.

seal hunt
By: Barbara , Thu, 07 May 2009 22:40:58 GMT

A sad commentary on the state of education in Canada: Earlier this week the Minister of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans argued that killing seals was just culling the extra seal population. She didn't understand why the Humane Society was upset with Canada. You can leave aside the cruelty of killing large numbers of God's beautiful creatures for greedy self-interest. But it's ridiculous that this government official doesn't know Charles Darwin's theory of evolution--survival of the fittest. So when humans randomly kill seals, they are probably killing a good number of the healthiest, strongest members of the group and leaving some of the weakest to grow up and raise weak progeny. A few years ago, Smithsonian magazine had an article called something like "Where are the Seals?" For years in one coastal location hunters sanctioned by Canadian govt. had been killing the female fur seals. Finally the whole seal population crashed. From hundreds of thousands only a small number were left. This same thing happens over and over but people are so greedy, they make some ignorant excuse and move on to devastating another "resource" of living creatures. Is it any wonder that the environment is crashing around us? I wish those selfish people would be the only ones to suffer, but climate change will affect all of us. That's why each of us has to speak up for all of us. Unless, of course, one has
a space ship hidden in the backyard ready to leave the Earth at any time.

I am personally ashamed of this news.

How pathetic you politicians are in Canada.

I am now going to boycott every product out of Canada...
