Croatia explores mass grave of 4,500 WWII German soldiers

Zagreb - Croatia is investigating a mass grave of German and local soldiers executed in the wake of World War II, the deputy president of the Croatian Helsinki Committee, Ivan Zvonimir Cicak, said Friday. The site at Harmica, 50 kilometres north-west of Zagreb, on Croatia's border with Slovenia, presumably contains 4,500 bodies of German soldiers, including 450 officers, executed by Yugoslav president Tito's partisans, Cicak told the German Press Agency dpa. The victims were a part of the "Blue division," established by the German command in Croatia in 1944. Commanded by German officers, the division was composed of Croats and German settlers to Yugoslavia. Details and photographs from the site at Harmica are to be released at press conference next week, Cicak said. Only a day earlier, Cicak had presented details from another newly-found mass grave, believed to contain some the remains of 1,500 Croat soldiers killed in June 1945. The grave was accidentally exposed by construction work on the embankment of the Darava river in Gornji Hrascani, near Cakovec in the north-west. The site is slated for additional exploration as soon as authorities secure financing for the job, Cicak said. During World War II, Croatia was considered an independent state, but was in effect run by Berlin and implemented Nazi laws. The rest of the then Yugoslav Kingdom was dismembered and more or less directly governed by various occupational forces from the German camp, like Italy, Hungary and Bulgaria. After claiming victory in Yugoslavia, Tito's Communist Partisan force took brutal revenge not only on German soldiers and the large German minority living mostly in northern Croatia and Serbia, but also on local members of wartime authorities. Following the war, the new authorities brought ethnic Germans to concentration camps and eventually drove the survivors out. In the end, only a few thousand, out of several hundred thousands living in Yugoslavia, remained. Last month a grave with hundreds of mummified corpses, also victims of the Partisans, was found in an abandoned mine in Slovenia. Speaking recently in the wake of that discovery, Croatian Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko estimated the number of mass graves from the era at more than 1,000. According to Karamarko, there are 600 mass graves in Slovenia, 840 in Croatia, 90 in Bosnia and "who knows how many more" strewn across the entire region.

Mass Post-WWII Graves in Croatia,Slovenia

Am weighing in late on this topic and perhaps at the wrong time, given all the "Inglorious Basterds" bullshit that is emanating (once again) out of Hollywood.
I choose to come forward to say this:
I am the son of men who fought on both sides in WWII. I survived the Vietnam War and its aftermath. Cut the politicizing and the romanticism and the stereotyping! A word here is due for the dignity and decency of the common German serviceman in WWII. Have you ever heard this? "Just because I am a German does not mean I am a nazi." Probably not if you were raised on Hollywood.
Know what your cousins did in Nam, by any chance? How about the Indian wars? Ya, the American Indian Wars (I'm part Northern Cheyenne too and damn proud of it).
There's too many idiots out there who still think WWII ended somewhere in Hollywood!
The killing went on, by all sides, for years. The camps of all sides held innocent people for decades.
I can only hope these dead from the past in the Balkans--from all sides--can be given but a small nod of decency.
That includes the men in field gray.
Signed; A. Soldat

These people killed were heroes and should be honored. They fought for Europe against the asisatic horde which was the soviet union. Serbs always bring up Jasenovac. Facts about this camp were made by the communists. No way in hell that many people died there. It is a fabricated number. To this day there is no proof that this many people died there. You never hear from the serbs that were converted into Croats during the war. They must have had it good.
I am an Austrian whose grandfathers fought in WW2. They were great men and heores. I have a minor in European History and I am not afraid of not being PC when it comes to European History.
Also the treatment of Serbs by the Axis armies was the result of Serbian behavior. Serbia was a constant agitator.

Who are Wars Victims?

Many of the German people killed by communist Yugoslavs, were simple peasant farmers who had lived in the area for a long time under Hapsburg rule. These people didn't care about Hitler or Nazi ideology, but they were killed anyway, AS WAS PROBABLY THE CASE WIHT POOR SERBIANS, CROATIANS,SLOVENIANS, AND OTHERS. WAR IS CRAP. WAR IS HELL, AND MOST OFTEN INNOCENT PEOPLE ON ALL SIDES GET KILLED. Let us become enlightened once and for all about what war is, my friends.

Croatian crimes

Some Croatians are liars, and that's due because of their stupid nationalism. They hide the truth and defend Tito who was one of the worst criminals of European history, not very different from Hitler. Tito the communist and his Croatian troops continued to kill even after WW2 hundreds of thousands of people, and if you do not believe you can read R.J.Rummel's books or the secret letters of the Archives of Moscow.
Some Croatian says: "that war finished 63 years ago, we should all look to the future". No mate. Your folk must pay for its crimes.

It is ironic

Serbia has promoted the myth of Serbian kinship with the Jews as fellow victims of Nazi oppression, while concealing the true extent of Serbian collaboration with the Nazis. It is ironic that N.G. Jones is now seeking Jewish support in which both the idealogy and methodology so tragically echo nazism. Google: "Banjica concentration camp" or "Staro Sajmište" Ordered by Serbia commander and established on the outskirts of Belgrade. Many Jews fled to the partisans of Croatian Tito -- who represented a truly multiethnic resistance to the Nazis. and were saved by them. Tito himself was Croat and one of his chief advisers, Moshe Piade, was Jewish.

Croatia never forget Jasenovac.
Where 600,000 Serbs were killed by the Croatian ustashi.
Croatia's Pavelic said in WW11 kill one third of the Serbian population, convert one third of the Serbian population to Catholicism and evict one third from territory. Pavelic and his ustashi did just that.
Now that Croatia has joined Nato all sorts of things are going to be discovered just by chance!!
It is the German and the Croatian souls who will have to live with this hate for Serbian people and it will destroy them in the end.

Croatia was a fascist state during WWII responsible for the slaughter of thousands of Serbs, Roma, Jews and other minorities so don't pretend to be the victim now. Also don't pretend to be victim during the war of the 90s. Tudjman was a fascist and a criminal, just like Milosevic and Izetbegovic.
Deal with your past Croatia: you were a fascist nazi state during WWII.

for those who don't know the history about that area some facts which can be proved by historical documents;
1.those were the war rules from both of the sides, nazi and partisan side, no prisoners.
2.During the war, there was not just a puppet nazi state in Croatia, was also in Serbia under Gen. Nedic who if you see historical documents killed or deported 99% of serbian Jews.
3. Not all croatians were the ustashe, if you look at the statistical percentage of the nations involved in partisans, anti-nazi movemant, can be seen that the highest percentage were the croats
4.before was mentioned some 70000000, By V. Zerjavic's book "The victims in Yugoslavia of WW2" we are coming to some 220.000 killed, not just serbs, also croatian antifashist, jews, romas, etc., the other value is obviously a false usually used by serbian propaganda when they are trying to present themself as the biggest victims of the war, even though we should all regret for all innocent victims
5. that war finished 63 years ago, we should all look to the future

WWII parallels Croatia 1991

But whatever we say, our words do not give justice to this violence, hunger for blood, killing. WWII offer striking parallels 1991. Hate towards Croatia helped Serbian forces in December 1991 traine their artillery on the beautiful, historic city of Dubrovnik or August 24th 1991 Vukovar. Googl it!

WWII offer striking parallels to 1991

WWII offer striking parallels to Serbian army in 1991. Hate towards Croatia helped Serbian forces to grow it to the never before remembered heights of violence, hunger for blood, killing. According to human rights organizations, Serbian Yugoslavia had the distinction of having one of the worst records among the world’s totalitarian countries a bloodbath, where out of a population of 15.5 million, 1 million died. It is extremely doubtful that the present Serbs will ever face the truth. The human toll in Croatia was horrific. The wholesale slaughter of Bleiburg and Krizni Put were portents of what was in store for Croatians. The Catholic Church also suffered enormously. The Serbs Communists perceived the Catholic Church of Croatia as its arch-nemesis. The tactic was to scatter the flock by killing the shepherds. For example, Serbian forces entered the Franciscan Monastery of Siroki Brijeg, doused fourteen friars with petrol and set them afire. In another example, only 88 priests of the 151 in Senj’s diocese survived the Communist policy. Yet there are those who continue to pay homage to Serbs Communism.

German Mass Graves

People found in those graves were Nazi's! They were responsible for the ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians. For every Nazi soldier killed by a Serbian the Germans would kill 100 Serbian civilians. Also remember that Tito was NOT Serbian, he was half Croat and half Slovene and that he also murdered tens of thousands of Serbians after the war!

I wonder if the Karomarko is quite as concerned about the 7000000 Serb graves whom their Nazi Ustashe hordes massacred in the days of the Pavelic holocaust from 1941 onwards. That I suspect is something they'd want to keep quiet about!!
