Athens - Several banks and automatic teller machines were struck by Molotov cocktails in Athens on New Year's night in an apparent continuation of disturbances following the shooting death of a teenager by police in early December. No one was injured in the attacks, according to local media reports. The police presence in Athens was strong in anticipation of a large demonstrations, which did not take place. Protesters in Athens' Syntagma Square however burned Israeli and US flags in protest at Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. In the northern city of Thessaloniki, police used tear gas to disperse a group of around 30 violent protesters who threw stones and set fire to rubbish bins.
