Nicosia - Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have announced their commitment to finding a solution to the island's divisions, UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Alexander Downer reported Monday after talks with the two leaders in the capital Nicosia. Both leaders announced a renewed obligation to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus question, Downer told Cyprus broadcaster RIK.
The three men are to meet again on January 5, 12, and 16.
Greek and Turkish Cypriots continue to have differing conceptions of how a political future would be formed.
Greek Cypriots want a federation with a strong central government, while Turkish Cypriots favour a loose confederation of two independent states.
At year's end, both leaders have declared that there are topics about which there is much still to discuss, Downer said.
The southern Greek portion of Cyprus has been a member of European Union since May 1, 2004. The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus has been recognized exclusively by Turkey.
