New York - The UN Security Council will hold talks on international efforts to combat terrorism next week in the wake of the Mumbai attacks that killed more than 180 people, Croatia's ambassador to the United Nations said Tuesday. The 15-member council will meet December 9. It was not yet decided whether representatives of India or Pakistan would be invited to the discussions.

Gunmen last week opened fire on civilians at 10 prominent locations in Mumbai, killing 188 and injuring more than 300. Evidence that the attackers came from Pakistan has heightened tensions between the two neighbours.

The Security Council discussions will focus on international cooperation to confront terrorism around the globe. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic, whose country holds the council's rotating presidency in December, will join the talks.

"Fighting terrorism requires a flexible multilateral approach," Croatian Ambassador Neven Jurica told reporters. "The Security Council needs to send a clear message confirming our determination" to fight terrorism.
