Lake Louise, Alberta - Hermann Maier celebrated the 54th World Cup victory of his career when the Austrian won the men's super-G Sunday in Lake Louise, Alberta. The 35-year-old put his struggles with a back problem behind him to claim victory in a time of 1 minute, 29.84 seconds, a huge improvement on his 17th-place finish in Saturday's downhill.
John Kucera of Canada finished second, 0.59 seconds behind the winner, with Switzerland's Didier Cuche third at 0.68 behind Maier.
The win was four-time overall World Cup champion Maier's first since a downhill victory in January 2006 in Germany's Garmisch- Partenkirchen.
"From the point of view of application this was the old Herman Maier. I have already achieved my season objective with this," said Maier, after taking his first World Cup win in 1,037 days.
Maier, second in the all-time World Cup rankings, is still well behind the 86 race wins of Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.
