Berlin - An action thriller about the illegal activities of the world's biggest banks is to open next February's Berlin Film Festival, organizers announced Friday. The International by German-born director Tom Tykwer, stars Clive Owen as an Interpol agent and Naomi Watts as a New York attorney who risk their lives in trying to investigate the bank's business which includes financing wars and terror.

The premiere of the movie at the 59th Berlin Film Festival, which is one of the world's top three film festivals, comes at a time when banks have found themselves under the global spotlight as a result of the world financial crisis.

But then the Berlin Film Festival has never shied away from tackling current major political issues.

The 43-year-old Tykwer's previous movies include Perfume and Run Lola Run.

A British-German co-production, The International's lineup of stars also includes Armin Mueller-Stahl as well as Brian F O'Byrne (known for his role Million Dollar Baby), Ulrich Thomsen (Festen) and Jack McGee (LA Crash).

The International was filmed in Berlin, New York, Istanbul and Milan.
