Hamburg - Both Arsenal and Real Madrid needed 1-0 wins to book their places in the last 16 of the Champions League Tuesday while a draw was sufficient for Manchester United to ensure their berth in the knockout stages. Arsenal put a torrid week which saw William Gallas stripped of the captaincy and Arsene Wenger's side crash 3-0 at Manchester City behind them, registering a solid performance to beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0 thanks to a late Nicklas Bendner score.

Kiev finished the game with 10 men after Olexandr Aliyev received a straight red card for trying to move the referee away from the ball as he wanted to take a free-kick quickly.

In the other match in Group G Porto defeated Fenerbahce 2-1 thanks to a brace from Lisandro Lopez to ensure their qualification. Kazim- Kazim netted for the Turks.

Arsenal sit top of the Group with 11 points, two clear of Porto ahead of the two sides' clash in Portugal to decide who finishes top.

In Group E, a scoreless draw between defending champions Manchester United and Villarreal was enough to ensure both teams progress although the Spanish side did finish the game with 10 men after Joan Capdevila was sent off for a crude foul on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Aalborg take third and the UEFA Cup spot after coming from behind to beat Celtic 2-1.

Real Madrid put the trauma of successive defeats to Juventus behind them to ensure second spot in Group H as an early goal from Raul sealed a 1-0 win away to BATE Borisov.

Earlier, Juventus played out a scoreless draw away to Zenit St Petersburg. The already qualified Serie A giants dominated possession at the Petrovsky stadium in St Petersburg, but Zenit came closest to scoring when Pavel Pogrebnyak saw his long-range shot come back off a post.

Danny, who earlier saw a goalbound shot blocked, almost snatched victory and all three points for the home side close to the end but his shot went narrowly wide.

The draw means Juventus move on to 11 points with one game remaining. Real Madrid sit second on nine points, four clear of Zenit.

Bayern Munich and Lyon remain unbeaten and sit level at the top of Group F with 11 points apiece after securing impressive wins to book their spots in the knockout phase.

The German champions cruised to a 3-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest thanks to two goals from Miroslav Klose and one from Luca Toni while Lyon beat Fiorentina 2-1.

Jean Makoun put the French side two up before Karim Benzema pulled one back for Fiorentina.

The Champions League continues Wednesday with matches from Groups A to D.
