Tegucigalpa - A top Honduran legislator and the state telecommunications chief were killed by gunmen in the northern industrial city of San Pedro Sula Saturday. Political aides said the assassins intercepted the vehicle of Mario Fernando Hernandez Bonilla, a vice president of the Honduran legislature from the ruling Liberal Party, while he was campaigning for a party colleague 250 kilometres north of Tegucigalpa.

Carlos Collier, chief executive of the state telecommunications company Hondutel, was also killed along with a lawyer accompanying them and another unidentified man, police sources said.

Hernandez Bonilla was a member of the legislative Committee on Security and Narcotics Trafficking. Six months ago, he reported the appearance of a dead dog's head outside his residence in the capital,

which he interpreted as a death threat.
