Manila - The ailing husband of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo returned home Saturday after staying overnight in hospital in Japan with severe stomach pains, officials said. Jose Miguel Arroyo, 62, arrived in Manila aboard a private plane, said Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority.
"The first gentleman is in good condition except for mild diarrhea and vomiting," Cusi said. "He walked from the plane and boarded the car. He was talking to his companions."
Mr Arroyo was brought to St. Luke's Medical Center for a medical check-up and further observation.
Dr Juliet Cervantes said the first gentleman did not suffer a heart attack as initially reported.
"It's an ordinary case of diarrhea, just like what all of us can get," she said. "There was no significant finding. He has stable vital signs. He doesn't feel any kind of dehydration."
Cervantes said the first gentleman would probably stay for one day in hospital in Manila.
Mr Arroyo was travelling with the president to Lima to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit when their plane made an emergency landing late Friday in Osaka after Mr Arroyo fell ill.
The first gentleman, who has been linked to various corruption scandals in the Philippine government, underwent heart surgery in April 2007.
President Arroyo and her delegation left Osaka Saturday for the APEC summit after she was assured that her husband was in stable condition.
