Rome - Juventus Thursday announced plans for the construction of a new sports arena that will make them the first Italian club to host games in their a stadium they own. The new structure is to be built where the Stadio delle Alpi now stands, in north-western Turin. It should be completed by 2011.
It will hold 40,000 fans compared to the 69,000 of the old and currently unused Delle Alpi and the 27,000 of the Stadio Olimpico, where both Juve and Torino have played since 2006.
"Today the new house of the Juventini is born," club president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli said through Juve's web site.
"A modern and safe stadium to live the games even more intensely, not only watching them a few metres from the pitch, but also listening to all the voices and the noises typical of a football game.
"Juventus are the first club in Italy who will have a stadium for themselves and this is ground for pride. But it's also a a good opportunity for the club to diversify its income and find new ways to invest in the future."
