Islamabad - Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday congratulated US president-elect Barack Obama on his watershed win, saying he was looking forward to strengthening bilateral relations "to promote peace and stability in our region and beyond.""For long, the ideas of democracy, liberty and freedom espoused by the United States has been source of inspiration for the millions around the world. I hope that under your dynamic leadership, the United States will continue to be a source of global peace and new ideas for humanity," Gilani said in a letter to Obama.

The US presidential elections marked "a new new chapter in the remarkable history of the United States," according to the Pakistani premier.

He reiterated that the two allies in the war against terrorism shared common interests and objectives.

Gilani also congratulated Joe Biden on his election as vice-president, but reminded that the new administration was taking charge at a time when the world was facing multiple challenges.

"I hope we will work together to strengthen this strategic partnership between our two countries for enduring peace, security, stability and prosperity of our region and the world," Gilani said.
