Mexico City - At least 58 people were killed in one day in Mexico, media reports said Tuesday. Monday was the bloodiest day of the year in the country as 58 people died in incidents related to the notorious organized crime syndicate, the daily El Universal reported.
The newspaper has, since 2005, maintained a daily count of such violent deaths - there were 4,325 this year. On September 12, about 41 people were killed in a single day.
On Monday there were murders reported from eight Mexican states, with shootouts and grenade attacks in Sinaloa, Baja California, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Michoacan, Sonora, Guerrero and the state of Mexico, the daily La Jornada reported.
The victims included eight police officers, including Sonora state police commander Juan Manuel Pavon Felix.
