Madrid - The job of Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre is not in danger, according to the club's president on Friday. Enrique Cerezo told the digital version of Marca that the embattled Mexican coach is not in jeopardy, whatever happens in Sunday's game away to in-form Villarreal.

"Whatever happens against Villarreal, Javier Aguirre will continue to be the coach of Atletico Madrid," said Cerezo.

Atletico are currently eighth in La Liga - with just nine points from seven games - no less than 10 points behind leaders Valencia. Defeat against third-placed Villarreal could see Atletico crash down to 13th.

Aguirre - who joined the red-and-whites from Osasuna in 2006 - turned down another stint in charge of Mexico in the summer in order to guide Atletico back into the Champions League after 11 years' absence.

Atletico have made a sound start in Europe, and are joint top of Group D with Liverpool after Wednesday's 1-1 draw against the Premier League side.
