Mexico City - A brother and a nephew of Mexican drug lord Ismael Zambada, known by the alias "El Mayo," were arrested Monday in Mexico City, the Mexican public prosecutor's office confirmed Wednesday. A total of 16 people belonging to the Sinaloa Cartel were arrested in the raid on a mansion.
Jesus Zambada Garcia, alias "El Rey Zambada" and brother of "El Mayo," initially identified himself as Victor Rosas Montes. He is one of the leaders of the cartel, the authorities noted.
His son Jesus Zambada Reyes, 21, and his own nephew Juan Jose Esparra Zambada were also arrested, as was his right-hand man, Ricardo Flores, a native of the US state of California and son of the current wife of "El Rey Zambada," the Colombian Yahaira Escobar.
Mexican authorities said "El Rey Zambada" was one of the criminals who introduced cocaine and methamphetamines into Mexico from South America, as well as an associate of drug lords Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel. He was said to have been in charge of drug trafficking through the Mexico City airport.
