Brussels - European Union leaders backed a financial rescue package aimed at sheltering Europe's banks and savers from the global credit crunch, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday. The package was initially approved Sunday by eurozone leaders at a meeting in Paris.
The 2-trillion-euro (2.7-trillion-dollar) plan includes measures to guarantee interbank lending and to partly nationalize shaky financial insitutions.
"The whole of Europe, without exception, approves the plan agreed on Sunday," said Sarkozy, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU, at an EU summit in Brussels.
