Los Angeles - With the Boston Celtics' "Big Three" watching from the bench, the second unit took front and centre to give the defending NBA champions their first pre-season victory. Tony Allen scored 25 points, and Leon Powe hit the game-winning free throws with 13.6 seconds remaining, lifting the Celtics past the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-94 on Friday night.
Boston's famed trio of Paul Pierce (eight points), Ray Allen (five points) and Kevin Garnett (four points) were limited to an average of just eight minutes against their Eastern Conference rivals.
"I really hadn't planned on playing Kevin and those guys at all tonight," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "But I thought because we are right here down the road (in nearby Providence) the fans needed to see them a little bit. And they got a chance to see the other guy, LeBron (James), who is pretty good, too. I thought they got their money's worth.
James had 12 of his 15 points in the opening quarter and logged just 13 minutes for the Cavaliers (0-2) who fell to the Celtics in a thrilling seven-game series in their conference semifinal playoff series last spring.
The Cavaliers had chance to send the game into overtime, but rookie Billy Walker blocked Jawad Williams' layup at the buzzer, leveling the Celtics' exhibition mark at 1-1.
