London - England captain John Terry was on Friday ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan this weekend because of a niggling back injury. As had been widely anticipated after the Chelsea centre-back missed training throughout the week, manager Fabio Capello said Terry will not be risked in Saturday's group six encounter.
"It is a problem in the back for Terry," Capello said.
"But we have plenty of players, we have the substitutes, I am sure the substitute of John Terry will play well."
Rio Ferdinand will take over as captain for Saturday's match at Wembley, while Everton defender Joleon Lescott and West Ham's Matthew Upson are vying to replace Terry in the centre of the England defence.
