Madrid - Roger Federer may be ready to return to tennis after a three-week pause, as officials at the Madrid Masters confirmed on Thursday that his manager had made a preliminary hotel booking. The event, which begins on Sunday, will be headlined by Rafael Nadal, playing for the first time since seeing Spain into the Davis Cup final last month.
Tournament officials said that Federer's agent Tony Godsick, rang director Manolo Santana to reserve three rooms. A Friday confirmation would mean that the world's No. 2 will be participating in the event.
Federer lost the 2007 final to Argentine David Nalbandian, who is playing as top seed this week in Stockholm.
Federer withdrew last week from Stockholm, saying he would take an indefinite rest after overcoming glandular fever at the start of the season.
