Mexico City/Guatemala City - Former Guatemalan president Alfonso Portillo was on Tuesday extradited from Mexico to Guatemala where he faces corruption charges, Mexican authorities confirmed. Portillo was president of the Central American country from 2000 to 2004. He is charged with abusing his authority and embezzling some 32 million dollars.
Mexico had agreed to extradite him two years ago, but the former Guatemalan leader remained free as a result of several appeals.
Guatemalan Attorney General Jose Velasquez said Portillo arrived in a Mexican plane and was immediately taken to court.
