Lisbon - Three missing Belgian children have been found in northern Portugal, where their father was detained, police sources said Tuesday. The girls aged 7, 10 and 14 years went missing in January in Amberes, Belgium.

The Belgian authorities and an organization representing missing children launched a media and internet alert for the girls and their father, who was separated from the mother.

The man was believed to be taking the children across Europe on a trailer and making them beg for subsistence.

The children were finally found begging in the streets of Viseu on the basis of tips from local residents. They were handed over to a specialized institution, while the father was arrested late Monday. Police were investigating the case.
