Kathmandu - Nepalese custom officials seized 10 tons of Chinese-manufactured biscuits imported into the country amid growing health scare over contaminated milk products, media reports said Saturday. The seizure came a day after the government imposed a ban on the import of Chinese chocolates, candies and milk products.

"Custom officials have seized huge quantity of biscuits on suspicion that they might have been manufactured using contaminated milk products," Kathmandu Post newspaper quoted Uttam Kumar Bhattarai, the director general of department of food quality control.

Nepal was monitoring the situation in China closely and was consulting food technology experts in other countries to deal with possible threats, Bhattarai said.

"We have asked major department stores in Kathmandu and other cities across the country not to sell Chinese milk products," Bhattarai said.

"There are no immediate plans to lift the ban," Bhattarai said. "We are in touch with Chinese authorities in this regard."
