Beirut - A delegation from the pro-Syrian Hezbollah movement met Wednesday with anti-Syrian majority leader Saad Hariri at the latter's residence in an effort to end a four-month feud that almost plunged the country into a civil war. "It was not a meeting of reconciliation - it was a meeting of frankness," Hezbollah MP Mohammed Raad told reporters at Hariri's Koraitem mansion.
"We emphasize our commitment to what we agreed in Doha," Raad said, in reference to the accord reached at the Qatari capital more than three months ago.
He said a meeting between Hariri and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah would be held "very soon." Sources close to Hezbollah said the meeting might take place before the end of Ramadan.
"We are not feuding neighbors. We are brothers in one house. We can differ, but brotherhood and cordiality persist to bind us and form the atmosphere that we all seek to safeguard our homeland," Raad added.
For his part, Hariri said: "We are breaking the ice and we will not leave Beirut to be the victim of civil strife."
Hariri, a Sunni, and the Shiite movement Hezbollah are locked in a conflict which started after Hezbollah fighters and allied parties briefly occupied largely Sunni swathes of western Beirut in early May to protest a decision taken by the government against the group.
