Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police on Saturday released on bail a blogger, detained under the Sedition Act, news report said Sunday. Syed Azidi Syed Aziz, 38, also known as Sheih Kickthefella, was detained September 17 for allegedly inciting the public to fly the Malaysian flag upside down in one of his Internet postings.

The release came two days after opposition lawmaker Teresa Kok was released after being held without trial for a week under the Internal Security Act.

Opposition and rights groups have slammed the recent arrests as a government effort to crack down on dissent and have called for the security law, drafted almost 60 years ago, to be repealed.

The blogger, who will have to report back to the police on October 17, said he did not give any statement during his detention and would only do so when he is charged in court, the Star daily reported.

"I was very happy and contented to the point I had even forgotten my family and friends," said Syed Azidi, adding that he was grateful to the police who had obliged to his requests for medication, prayer mats and drinks.

Popular blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin who was detained two weeks ago under the draconian Internal Security Act, is still in detention despite mounting pressure from the public, opposition and rights group for his release.
