New York - Roger Federer swept to his fifth consecutive US Open title Monday, re-establishing order among the elite with a 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Andy Murray. Federer moved to within one trophy of the all-time career mark of 14 Grand Slam singles titles, held by Pete Sampras, as the Swiss dashed the Scot's attempt to become the first British titleholder at Flushing Meadows since Fred Perry in 1936.

Federer is the first man in the modern era to win five on the trot in New York, also earning his first major title of the season.

It was the first Monday final at the US Open since 1987, when Ivan Lendl defeated Mats Wilander for the men's title.
