New York - Bangkok Dangerous, the new thriller by Hollywood star Nicolas Cage, 44, had a lukewarm opening weekend, netting only 7.8 million dollars, the Lionsgate studio said Sunday. The figure was well below the 10 million dollars the studio expected for the premiere of the remake of twin brothers Danny and Oxide Pang's film about a jaded assassin.

Despite the disappointing performance, the film managed to push the action comedy Tropic Thunder off the top spot in the US movie charts.

The film starring Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Junior earned 7.5 million dollars.

Third place went to the comedy The House Bunny with 5.9 million dollars.

Box offices across North America collected 66 million dollars over the weekend, the worst income since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US

Just after the attacks, people stayed away from movie theatres, resulting in box office receipts of just 59.5 million dollars during the weekend of September 21, 2001.
