Milan - Inter Milan won their fourth Italian Supercup Sunday, beating Roma 8-7 in a penalty shootout after the game ended on a 2-2 draw at Milan's Giuseppe Meazza. New coach Jose Mourinho clinched a prestigious win on his first official game with the Serie A champions a week before the start of the league.
Inter twice took the lead through Sulley Muntari and Mario Balotelli but conceded as many equalizers as the Italian Cup winners scored with Daniele De Rossi and Mirko Vucinic.
Inter produced an early hammering press that allowed them to take the lead on 18 minutes through a goal from Ghana forward Muntari.
The new arrival fired home a loose ball that had bounced off the bar after Roma defender Philippe Mexes attempted to clear a cross from Douglas Maicon.
Two other chances went begging for Inter when Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic aimed wide after getting the best of two defenders and fired a wide volley a few minutes later.
Italian Cup winners Roma had no telling chances in the remainder of the first half as they created only sterile central actions and seemed unable to attack Inter on the flanks.
The second half seemed to bring no changes to the game, but Roma still managed to equalize on 59 minutes through a smashing drive from Daniele De Rossi, who acted as captain as flagbearer Francesco Totti came on late in the second half.
The international midfielder pounced on a loose ball and stunned Brazil's Julio Cesar, who seemed to be out of position as he barely grazed the ball with his fingertips.
Roma's game suddenly gathered steam after the draw, but Inter kept their cool and Mourinho brought on the young Mario Balotelli and Luis Jimenez to replace Luis Figo and Brazilian Mancini.
Fielding Balotelli turned out to be a crucial move as the striker topped a counterattack on 83 minutes, spurting past Roma's clumsy defence and laid past Alexander Doni off a long feed from goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
Roma's desperate pressing was rewarded on 90 minutes through a lucky goal when Dejan Stankovic fooled his goalkeeper, deflecting a header from Vucinic.
A first threat in extra time came from a Balotelli free kick well deflected by Doni, who then blocked a central drive by Stankovic and punched a second Balotelli free kick.
Balotelli forced another great save from the area limit in the second extra time, while Julio Cesar, a Brazilian like Doni, had to block a dangerous spurt by Stefano Okaka.
Inter captain Javier Zanetti, who converted his side's last spot kick, said: "We deserved to win this game. It is a great start of the season. This is how we wanted to begin."
