Beijing - The executive vice president of the Beijing organizing committee and Games spokesman on Friday criticized the media for negative reporting. Wang Wei told a press briefing that there was a bias from some of the journalists. He was reacting to negative questions directed at the organizing committee by journalists on human rights issues, internet censorship, pollution and the situation in Tibet. "So many criticisms in this room just reflect how biased some of the media are about China, how little some of the media understand China." He compared it with the reporting about the torch relay outside China, which focussed on demonstrations about the situation in Tibet, where Chinese officials had brutally clamped down on protests. "History will show how correct the decision of the IOC was in 2001 in awarding the games to China." Wang's statements came just a few hours after security officials detained two photographers from an international news agency and accused them of being part of a demonstration.

someone commented earlier on the gymnast judging... i had heard that they changed the rules in judging and it did fit the chineese better. it would appear that they were able to do this sucessfully, i mean with the underage girls and everything else. id say china cheated really well, and almost didnt get caught. from the begining it was a sham, a hoax. the fireworks were digitally created for those watching tv, the girl singing wasnt even the real singer....the end......you cant trust it

All of you are trying so hard to sound like you know what you're talking about, yet lack enough education, intelligence or work ethic to actually look at what you wrote, fix the bad spellings, fix the grammar, finish sentences that don't end, etc. Show us you take some care with what you write and you'll show us some thought went into your screed.

Perhaps Mr Campbell would detail all those things he wished to do that the evil Bush administration has prevented him from doing. The fact that he seems to have no fear of posting his opinions on a public website shows his post is mostly narcissistic posturing. The left, on the other hand, has passed laws which prevent the following actions:Selling your home to whomever you want. hiring and firing by your own criteria, opting out of the social security system, owning your own retirement account under the social security system, using the light bulb of your choice after 2012. Choice, it seems for liberals, is only about killing unborn children.
We should be concerned, however, not only about Chinese abridgment of fundamental rights, but also about European and Canadian attacks on fundamental rights. Most of Europe and Canada have abrogated freedom of speech over the last couple of decades. In those countries stating an opinion can result in prosecution, fines and imprisonment. All, in Orwellian fashion, under the guise of human rights commissions. No doubt, liberals looks on these prosecutions as models for "change" in an Obama administration.

"Recent research conducted by the International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet suggests that, despite their age, children suffer similar treatment. One interviewee, for example, a 12-year-old girl who was detained at a local police station for carrying a friend's religious writings to her home town of Lhokga, described being beaten with sticks and shocked with cattle prods during interrogation." Now you see why they have excellent young gymnasts!

Wow, accusing McCain of lying about the houses. He did not forget or lie. He honestly answered that he did not know because he was unsure about how many houses his wife owned. He does not own any. Obama does a shady deal with a convicted felon who was one of his biggest fund raisers and want you to forget about that. Wow! This article was about the Chinese government (loved by the Dems and supporters of the Dems) and the news media and you turn it into a McCain thing. You must be nervous.

I love the way liberals use every opportunity to trash their own country and belittle people they disagree with. Then they kiss the rear end of people who would throw them into a re-education camp faster than you can say, inalienable rights or just make inane statements about people who are old enough to know the difference between freedom and totalitarianism.

While Janie and Tom are idiots, I support their right to freely express their asinine ascertains. After all, we're Americans. We're used to saying what we think, even if we are simply regurgitating the same old tripe that has been promulgated by the left in this country. Do I think it’s O.K. for our country to investigate the financials of foreign nationals or even wire tap them when they are making international calls. I’ve got no problem with that. How many attacks have occurred on U.S. soil since 9/11. Uh, that would be zero. Up until a year ago, the Dems were arguing that the war was unwinable and that the surge would never work. That’s because Dems are invested in finding fault with the U.S. and are (yes, I said it) unpatriotic. Do we bash flag burning, gay marriage, etc. because we’re zealots. No, we’re just expressing our opinion and our right to free speech the same way you are. It’s funny how the left believes they should be heard, but that conservatives should just shut up. By the way, Janie, McCain owns zero houses. They all belong to his rich wife, so he does really keep up with them. But if you would like to talk about presidential candidates wives, I’d sure like to discuss Michelle Obama with you.
By the way, go to http://www.thoseshirts.com to find conservative t-shirts. My favorite is Obama with Mickey Mouse ears.
Free Speech!! Communists and Liberals hate it because it makes them look bad.

The international media has the free right to 'turn on the heat' and scrutenize whatever story they please, good or bad, approved by government or disaproved. So I say, China welcome to the real world.
And stop complaining about the pressure, it sounds like a little kid crying because a bully picked on him. The world can't accept the Chinese 'official' news without question. The media is given the right TO QUESTION. Enjoy the time under the spot light while it lasts.

What is with you people comparing Obama to Chinese reporting. What false reporting are you talking about? You should look to your "Leader" the Republican party! They HATED McCain until they realized he was going to be the choice for running for president. Now they downplay all of the STUPID things he says and does. McCain is doing the very best he can. Poor little old man can't hardly do his ABC'S anymore. And he either forgot about how many houses he had, Or lied about them. Either way we are in BIG trouble if we go with that lying/forgetful old man. And the Repub's will be right there to clean up his spills. They have lied about the Bush administration and it's false (OR, "OOPS I forgot to read that bill that came to my desk while I was out boating. Just veto it. Much easier. Hey, look at this big fish I caught Brownie!!! By The way, your doin' a heck of a job!!)EVIL doings for years.

Ricardo, your comment about a Democratic super-majority clearly shows your ignorance. There has been no greater restriction of freedom than that under Republican Bush administration as a response to 9/11. Democrats who have opposed even greater restrictions have been called out as un-American and un-patriotic to try to bully them into acquiescence. Is it not a common Republican theme to bash Democrates for allowing TOO MUCH freedom, i.e., gay marriage, flag burning, right to sue when harmed, etc? Republicans have expanded corporate rights while limiting individual rights to advance their primary support base. And it is individual rights that everyone in complaining about with the Chinese. Get your facts straight.

Even though I do not subscribe to the tenants of the communist government in China. Their efforts to keep the protesters away from the event worked, they kept the focus on the games, and the worlds athletes were able to focus on the sports they work so hard to excel at as opposed to worrying about some element of certain societies from harming them or distracting them from achieving their goals, in the form of medals; (Gold-Silver-Bronze).
These athletes are ambassadors from their respective countries gathered together to not only win at their respective events but to demonstrate even during fierce competition it can be done with style and grace.
China you put on one of the best demonstrations of hosting the games ever. The opening was magnificent, the facilities were superb, and the media coverage was good, even with the these quasi intellectual geopolitical comments interspersed daily.
I say that whomever gets the opportunity to put the games on in the future will have very large shoes to fill.
Congratulations China on your efforts, well done.

The Chicoms Hate to Be Exposed for What They Are

Chinese officials abhor a free press. They are used to controlling all information. The Olympics weakened their control over information, and the world is seeing them for what they really are -- totalitarian bullies.
What I don't understand is how Sen. Obama can heap praise on these cretins while criticizing the USA for allegedly under-investing in "infrastructure". I'd rather have my freedom than a lot of eye-candy engineering and a lot of eminent domain government mandated infrastructure any day! Furthermore, I'd compare our investment in housing, roads, airports and bridges to any nation on earth, including the worker's paradise of the "People's Republic".
If Sen. Obama loves the Chicoms so much, then I'd encourage him to run for office over in China. We don't need his brand of anti-Americanism here.

While visiting the New Territories in Kowloon (Hong Kong) while serving in the U.S. Navy, I was riding on a tour bus and listening to the young male tour guide run down American, pretty much Like Messiah Obama did yesterday. Having enough of this spoon fed tripe from this communist dupe, I stood and advised the young punt, a.k.a. Obama mentor, that one more negative comment from him about America and I was personally going to throw his wise ass off the bus.
The rest of the trip was quite and respectfully.
That, quite frankly, is what these meelie mouthed reporters have to do with Chinese who try to stifle their reporting and tell them what to write. Unfortunately, the lemmings these guys are ... that will NEVER happen!

These Olympic Games have highlighted to the world as not other recent avenue has the Orwellian character of the Red Chinese government and the nation living under their collective thumbs.
What these cloistered ruling Reds have not yet understood is that the rest of the world is not yet under their control. That eventually may change of course, given the enabling mind set of weak western governments and the greed of the soulless international corporations.
Additionally, the IOC is a corrupt organization which is not to be believed by anyone who wishes to know reality over spin.

The IOC blames the biased media, huh? For the most part the same liberal media that props up the likes of Obama. The media just finally experienced first hand what kind of government China really has. There were too many media outlets, and they were not about the payoff the government and tow the line, like media organizations such as CNN have done historically.
China created their own problems, when they started arresting people who were potential protestors, and blocking Internet sites during the Olympics.
The IOC should be ashamed of awarding China this award. China made not substantial movement in the area of human rights. In fact, China displaced 10's of thousands of people as they built infrastructure for the games. News that the Western media rarely covers.

It truly amazes me to read these comments. On the one hand, these bastions of human liberty rail against the practices of the Communist Chinese. (Myself included) Yet they allow this Administration to hock our Country up to the eyeballs to these tyrants. They blithely consume Chinese sweatshop products, shop at known Chinese outlets like Mao-mart (Wallmart), never even caring about "country of origin" labels. Until we take back our Country from Corporate greed, corrupt administrations and enforce OUR OWN Constitutional laws, Communist China will continue to laugh at us all the way to the bank. I think it may have been Lenin who quipped "Americans will sell anything to anyone including the rope to hang them with". Whomever said it...it appears they were right.

China micromanaged this Olympics in order to portray their country as something they are not. The “Lip Synching” child soloist, the lack of protestors in their desiginated protest areas, the failure to make available tickets to events in order to avoid terrorist events, unlawfully using the protector’s of the Law to conviently lockup those who pointed out their government had failed them.
It reminds me of what Ralph Wado Emerson once said, China, “Who you are speaks so loudly I can't hear what you're saying.”

China doesnt seem to grasp that the rest of the world has rules, and it needs to come to terms with that before it criticizes our reaction to its policies.
Communism as an ideology is dead, so the only way the government can stay in power is to provide economic growth and spectacles like the olympics. These games are not for the world, they're for China to reinforce the illusions on their own citizens. They control the media so it's citizenry cant get the true stories of its attrocities, and they can keep serving them the 'one China' kool aid.

Clearly China is not prepared to be a world power. They have it backwards. China does not understand the global media. they always focus ont he negative..and if you can't get used to that forget about trying to be a superpower. Part of being a global power is being about to take the constant heat. My concern is that they'll get so "hurt" by global critics that they'll respond with force. You have to be bigger than that China if you want to plan on a global stage. Too immature.

The Chinese are forced to use the same 'argument' Goebbels resorted to in an earlier fascist Games. Rather than saying that such criticisms had no basis of truth (which obviously he could not) he simply lashed out at an unarmed press. Is it any wonder that such fools can only stay in power through censorship and maintaining a level of stupidity amongst its subjects? And what saddens me is that I and so many others knew how this would play out whilst the IOC could not see past the corrupt money.

If you can't stand the media heat, get out of the kitchen. Geez, so a few protestors detract from the 24/7 fawning that the media have given China. So the thin scab over the drab, polluted "showcase" of Beijing has been scratched off. Message to the Chinese Communist Party: If you want to play in the top echelons of world culture and business, you damn well better be ready to accept civil liberties and people's freedom to create and innovate. If that does not happen, it doesn't matter how many people or factories they have to manufacture knock-offs of products conceived in more advanced, free countries. Without freedoms, the nation will never become a leader in world business. Just look at India for comparison.

Ah!! They have finally figured out that the rest of the world isn't just kowtowing to their perspective.
I was almost beginning to think they were going to make through to the end of the games still not having to acknowledge that noncitizens of China are not afraid of them and don't believe them.
