Brussels - The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, on Tuesday condemned the "unworthy and barbaric" attack in Afghanistan that left 10 French soldiers dead. "The attack perpetrated against French soldiers serving in Afghanistan is an unworthy and barbaric act," Solana said in a statement.
"These French soldiers served freedom and democracy. It is for these values that they fell," he added.
Solana said the courage and determination displayed by the French soldiers meant the attack would have the effect of strengthening their resolve to defend Afghanistan.
The attack on the French convoy east of Kabul has been blamed on Taliban militants.
It caused the biggest loss of French troops since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001 and prompted French President Nicolas Sarkozy to fly to the country.
France currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU.
