Beijing - Kazakhstan weightlifter Illya Ilin on Sunday won the men's 94kg weightlifting gold at the Beijing Olympics with 406 kg, beating Poland's Szymon Kolecki and Khadzhimurat Akkaev from Russia. The 20-year-old Ilin, who already holds two gold medals from the world championships, managed 180kg in the snatch portion of the competition.
At the end of his three attempts, Ilin was lying 5kg behind Akkaev, but he then lifted a massive 226kg on his final attempt in the clean and jerk to move to the top and take the gold.
Akkaev managed 217kg in the clean and jerk and had to also allow Kolecki past with 224kg.
It was the first gold medal for Kazakhstan at these Olympics.
