Wolfsburg - Volkswagen will launch the sixth generation of the Golf at the Paris Motor Show in October with the car maker revealing more details of the vehicle with the entry model to sell in Germany for 16,500 euros (25,500 dollars). Pictures released by Volkswagen show a car with design features of the new Scirocco such as the open lower front grille with daylight running lights.

The flanks have a rising "character line" that emphasize the rear shoulder on which the C-pillar rests.

With the new model costs 200 euros more than its predecessor, the Golf VI comes with a range of new assistance systems including automatic distance control, park assist, adaptive chassis and a new ESP (Electronic Stability Programme).

In addition safety systems include seven airbags with one for the knee of the driver as standard equipment. Two additional side airbags are available as an option.

The four petrol engines are in the range between 59 kW/80 hp and 118 kW/160 hp. The diesel engines are fitted with common-rail technology and are in the range 66 kW/90 hp to 125 kW/170 hp.

According to VW all the engine and gearbox combinations have a significantly improved fuel economy with savings of up to 28 per cent or 2.3 litres per 100 kilometres compared to the Golf V. The TSI model with the 90 kW/122 hp engine is listed with 6.2 litres and an emission figure of 144 grammes of C02 per kilometre. The fuel consumption of the diesel engines have not been released.

In the medium term, Volkswagen is planning a 1.2-litre diesel three cylinder model with a consumption of just 3.9 litres, according to company sources. The consumption would relate to an emission figure of 103 g/km.

Volkswagen's CEO Martin Winterkorn earlier said that the company was planning a hybrid version of the Golf VI generation. A small test fleet of 20 Golfs are currently testing hybrid technology which would enable travelling with electric drive over longer distances. The Twin-Drive Golf has three electric engines to support the combustion engine.
