Maputo - Three people missing for two weeks were found to have drowned themselves in Mozambique's Limpopo River out of fear of discrimination after being diagnosed HIV positive, local media reported Friday. According to the daily Noticias, one of the deceased before his disappearance confessed to a relative of wanting to hang himself after testing positive for the virus that causes AIDS.

Local psychologist Rogerio Moreira said a lack of proper counseling and the fear of discrimination could lead people to end their lives.

Mozambique's southern Gaza province is one of the regions worst hit by the pandemic, with 27 per cent of its population infected.
