Munich - Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol has undergone surgery on an Achilles tendon injury and will miss the start of the Bundesliga season, the German champions said Tuesday. The injury is a further setback for the France international who missed much of last season following knee surgery and a back problem.
The 31-year-old right-back, now Bayern's most senior player, will definitely miss Bayern's Bundesliga opener against SV Hamburg on August 15.
Sagnol returned to action in time for Euro 2008 in June where he was part of a disappointing France team. He has since said he was considering retiring from international football but would not be rushed into a decision.
Meanwhile Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann could have Italy striker Luca Toni in contention for a place in the side for Sunday's German Cup first-round match at third-division Rot-Weiss Erfurt.
Toni is expected to return to training on Wednesday as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.
