Port-au-Prince/Essen, Germany - A Catholic nun kidnapped 10 days ago in Haiti was freed after the payment of a ransom of "less than 5,000 US dollars," a spokesman for the Catholic aid organization Adveniat said Monday in the western Germany city of Essen. The nun, a member of the order of the Little Sisters of Saint Therese, was released unharmed by organized criminals after being abducted while riding a public bus in Haiti.
The criminals originally demanded around 100,000 dollars for the release of the 35-year-old woman, who was wearing a nun's habit.
According to the Adveniat statement, a nun was last kidnapped in Haiti three years ago.
Organized criminals have recently discovered the business of kidnapping, with several kidnap attempts made in the last weeks.
