Athens - An enraged jealous husband has beheaded his wife on the Greek resort island of Santorini, Greek television reports said Sunday. The 40-year-old man then injured five people, two of whom are in a life-threatening condition, when he ran amok in a police car through the narrow streets of the island.

"The man is mentally ill," Santorini Mayor Angelos Roussos said in television reports.

"In a fit of jealousy, he cut his 35-year-old wife's head off with a large knife and went out into the street holding her head," Roussos said.

The man wounded a policeman who rushed to the scene, stole a squad car and drove "like a madman" through the island's narrow alleys.

He knocked two women down, seriously injuring them, the reports said.

Police were able to disable the man with gunfire and overcome him.

A female passerby was slightly injured when a bullet ricocheted during the attempts to subdue the man.

The "Wild West" scenes caused panic among the thousands of tourists on the island, reports said, but no foreigners were believed to have been injured.
