Washington - Need to edit a web address quickly in your browser? Instead of retyping the entire address, you can move from one part of the address to the next by holding down the Ctrl key as you tap the right or left arrow key on your keyboard. Washington - Need to find a computer on your Windows network? Just as you can open a Search dialogue box by holding down the Windows key and pressing the letter F, you can use another keyboard shortcut to search for computers on a network. Press and hold down the Windows key and the Control key, and tap the letter F. The Search-Computers dialogue box opens.

Washington - Can you catch a computer virus from an e-mail message? Most viruses are spread through files that are sent via e-mail, not from text contained in a message itself. But even viruses in attachments cannot infiltrate your computer unless you open them, so be sure you know who the sender of a message is before you open an attachment. If you don't know, don't open that file.

Washington - You can do a lot more in Open and Save dialogue boxes in Windows than you probably realized. Most of these dialogue boxes allow you to delete or rename files, for example. To rename a file, highlight it, press F2, and type a new name. To delete a file, highlight it, and press the Delete key. Also, don't overlook the row of icons on the left side of the box. They allow you to jump directly to common storage locations, such as your desktop or My Documents folders (and they are a lot easier on the eye than the dropdown list of files and folders under "Look in").

Washington - A dirty keyboard is not only unsightly but also a health hazard, so why not keep it clean? Be careful, though, when cleaning. Keyboards are delicate and can be easily damaged through improper cleaning techniques. Use a handheld vacuum cleaner or a hose attachment from a stand-up vacuum to remove any dust. You can then dampen a cloth or paper towel and lightly wipe the tops of the keys. Use plain water to lightly dampen the cloth, but be careful: too much water will damage the keyboard.
