Beirut - A team sent to Lebanon by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon began Saturday examining the country's border security, a UN source said. The Lebanese Independent Border Team (LIBAT) includes four experts with military, police and customs experience and it arrived in Lebanon Thursday.

The team will conduct a checkup on Lebanon's ongoing efforts to enhance border management capacity following recommendations by LIBAT during its first visit in 2007, the source said.

The LIBAT team started their two-week mission by "consultations with Lebanese officials as well as other partners already assisting Lebanon in this area" and will then present a report to the UN secretary general at the end of their mission.

Lebanon's border security has been criticized with claims that weapons are smuggled into the country and militants can enter illegally.
