Tehran - Iran wants its arch-foe the United States to stay in the talks about its nuclear programme and considers the US presence as "more effective to reach a settlement," ISNA news agency reported Saturday. "The National Security Council secretary (Saeid Jalili) has proposed to keep the 6+1 model as this model would be more effective to reach a settlement for this (nuclear dispute) issue as well as regional matters," an unnamed Iranian official told ISNA.
For the first time in almost three decades, Iran and the US held direct negotiations within the framework of nuclear talks in Geneva between Tehran and the five United Nations Security Council member states plus Germany.
Iran was represented in Geneva by National Security Council Secretary Jalili, who is also chief nuclear negotiator, and Washington by Under Secretary of State William Burns.
Although the Geneva talks led to no breakthrough in the dilemma over Iran's controversial nuclear work and Tehran once again refrained to give a clear reply to the world powers' demand that it suspend uranium enrichment, the two sides have agreed to meet again in two weeks.
