Brussels - Bulgaria stands to lose 610 million euros (970 million dollars) in European Union funds because of its failure to deal with rampant corruption and organized crime, according to extracts of a report leaked to the media on Friday. Bulgaria "has to make the commitment to cleanse its administration and ensure that the generous support it receives from the EU actually reaches its citizens and is not siphoned off by corrupt officials, operating together with organised crime," the BBC quoted the report as saying.
The highly critical document, which is due to be adopted by the European Commission on Wednesday, calls for a freeze of EU funds handled by two agencies.
The EU executive has already blocked hundreds of millions of euros worth of aid meant to help improve Bulgaria's roads and agricultural sector because of corruption.
Commission officials in Brussels would not comment on the report Friday, saying only that any decision would not be made until Wednesday.
Bulgaria and its neighbour Romania joined the EU in 2007.
