Madrid - Pablo Aimar is about to sign for Portuguese giants Benfica, according to Lisbon sports paper A Bola on Saturday. A Bola claims that Zaragoza - who were surprisingly relegated in Spain last season - have agreed to sell the Argentine playmaker to Benfica for around 7.5 million euros (11.87 million dollars).
New Benfica coach Quique Sanchez Flores is keen to clinch the Aimar signing as soon as possible. Sanchez Flores was Aimar's coach at Valencia from 2005 to 2006, before the little Argentine was sold on to Zaragoza.
Benfica are keen to find a playmaker to replace Rui Costa, who retired in June and is now the club's sporting director.
Aimar, 28, joined Valencia from River Plate in 2001 and helped "Los Ches" to win the 2002 and 2004 Spanish titles, as well as the 2004 UEFA Cup.
