Dhaka - At least 13 people, including members of a bridal party, were killed in highway accidents across Bangladesh at the weekend, media reports said Sunday. Seven of a 20-member wedding group travelling in a micro-bus died as the vehicle slewed from a rain-soaked road and plunged into a ditch in north eastern Sylhet province, the Bangladesh Observer said.

The accident happened early Saturday close to the farming town of Sarail 270 kilomtres north of, the newspaper reported quoting highway police.

The bride and the groom escaped unhurt as they were in another bus. The crash also left six people seriously injured.

Five family members were killed when an express train rammed their taxi at an unmanned level crossing in the eastern business town of Narsingdi near Dhaka late Friday, the daily reported.

Local rescuers said the condition of another taxi passenger was critical. The collision disrupted train links in the district for over five hours, breaking intercity connections.

A border guard was killed in northern Joypurhat district when he was run over by a speeding truck in the third incident of a fatal highway mishap close to the India-Bangladesh frontier.

More than 4,000 people die annually in highway crashes in Bangladesh.
