Alonso leads in final British GP practice

Silverstone, Britain - Former world champion Fernando Alonso of Spain led the way in a Renault on Saturday in the last free practice session for the British Formula One Grand Prix. Alonso clocked 1 minute 20.740 seconds for the 5.141-kilometres course to place ahead of Australia's Mark Webber in a Red Bull and Heikki Kovalainen of Finland in a McLaren-Mercedes.

Local hero Lewis Hamilton was fifth in a McLaren, world champion Kimi Raikkonen of Finland ninth and the his Ferrari teammate, the 2008 championship leader Felipe Massa of Brazil, 12th.

The qualifying session was set for later Saturday and the British GP for Sunday.
