London - Australia forward Harry Kewell was expected to join Turkish side Galatasaray later Saturday in a move from England's Liverpool. The 29-year-old is a free agent after his contract with Liverpool expired, and he arrived in Istanbul Friday to sign a three-year deal.
"I'm ecstatic, I'm thrilled to bits and looking forward to the new challenge," he told the club's website.
"I can't wait to join the team and get going. There's a lot of talk about the Turkish league, it's coming up in the world. The national team has done well in the last couple of international tournaments and there's a lot of young talent here."
"It's different and that's what I'm looking forward to - the new challenge," said Kewell.
Turkey reached the semi-finals at the recent Euro 2008 tournament and the league is also attracting more and more big-name players and coaches.
Euro-winning Spain coach Luis Aragones was set to move on to Fenerbahce and Galatasaray have a new coach as well in German Michael Skibbe.
