NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass., Jan. 18 For U.S. adults over the age of 40, the effects of aging plus poor exercise habits, old injuries, genetics and overuse is resulting in a boom of boomeritis. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons defines boomeritis as sports-related injuries suffered by baby boomers -- born between 1946-1964 -- that include bursitis, tendonitis, arthritis, sprains, strains and stress fractures.Fitness expert Michael Wood says he is concerned that baby boomers face increased risk of injury due to:-- a lack of knowledge regarding suitable age-related exercises.-- improper exercise techniques -- incorrect weight amounts, form and pacing.-- avoidance of exercises aimed at increasing strength, flexibility and balance.Wood says baby boomers should do strength-building and conditioning activities to prepare for the demands of daily life and to ensure active, extended lives.Copyright 2007 by UPI
