Rome - The Italian car maker Lancia is reviving the "Delta" name with a new hatchback scheduled for launch on European markets in September. Harking back to the first Delta of 1979 with its high-performance engine and sporty design, the new Delta comes with the choice of four turbo power units and other features such an advanced ESP (electronic stability programme), electronic damping control, lane assist and active parking assist.

The 1.4-litre engine comes in either a 120 or 150 horsepower while the 1.6-litre diesel unit is offered in a 120 hp and 165 hp version.

Additional engine choices are planned for later in the year such as a 1.9-litre Biturbo unit with 190 hp and a 1.8-litre TurboJet petrol unit with 200 hp scheduled for February 2009.

Measuring 4.5 metres in length, 1.8 metres in width and 1.5 metres in height the vehicle is significantly larger than the VW Golf which dominates the European hatchback market segment.

Designed by the Lancia Style Centre, the third generation Delta stands out with its triangular-shaped grille with a dynamic impression created by the large front air intakes.

The high waist line blends toward the rear with a spoiler integrated into the rear window with LED tail-lights rounding off the high-tech appearance.

Production of the original Delta was ceased in 1994. A second generation was built between 1993-1999.
