Los Angeles - Star Trek actor George Takei got a marriage license Tuesday to wed his gay partner in California, where same sex marriages became legal for the first time. Takei's visit to a registry office in West Hollywood was mobbed by photographers eager to snap shots of the most famous celebrity to take advantage of California's liberal new law.
The event also sparked numerous jokes based on the motto of the Starship Enterprise, "To boldly go where no man has gone before." Takei's character Mr Sulu was the Enterprise's helmsman on the Star Trek spaceship.
"I think it's a glorious California morning to make history," said Takei, 71. "Congratulations to all of us: May equality live long and prosper."
Other celebrities who plan to hold a gay wedding in Los Angeles included talk show hostess and comedian Ellen de Generes, who announced plans last month to marry her partner, actress Portia De Rossi.
