Tehran - Iran filed a protest against Israel with the United Nations over Israeli threats to attack Iran if the Islamic state continued its nuclear weapons programme, official news agency IRNA reported early Sunday. In a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council, the Iranian UN mission demanded a firm reaction against threats by Israel's Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz, describing his comments as a blatant violation of the UN charter.

Mofaz said in an interview in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper to be published Sunday that if Iran continued its programme to develop nuclear weapons, Israel would attack the country.
